SDAMH identified over a number of years that, in common with statistics gathered by other agencies, there are an increasing number of clients of Services who are over the age of 60 years. In one year alone SDAMH worked with 91 people aged 60+ years. These numbers provided indicators of the need for a specific Service, which was previously unavailable.
As a result SDAMH successfully submitted a bid to the Stirling Area JLIP Mental Health Group, to provide a community service for people living in the Stirling Council area, over the age of 60 years, experiencing or recovering from mental ill health.
This new Service, which began in November 2007, addresses a number of areas of support, including;-
- One to one befriending with trained volunteers
- Small group work e.g. reminiscence
- Cookery on a budget and exercise
- Provision of information
- Support and introduction to local community resources and activities
- Daily Living skills
- Pensions advice
Whilst this Service will provide a valuable resource for its clients, it cannot embrace all of the perceived needs of its clients and will not address medical issues.
How To Be Referred
The Service has a referral system. The Older People's Service encourages the person requesting the Service and the referring agency to jointly complete the Referral Form.
Referrals are taken from – Social Workers, Psychiatrists, GPs, CPNs, Key Workers or other voluntary sector agencies.
Criteria for Referral
Adults 60 + years. Living within Stirling Council areas, experiencing or recovering from mental ill health.
An assessment would then be undertaken to determine if the potential client was eligible for the Service.
