Facts about Suicide
- Around 3 out of 4 suicides are by men
- Suicide is the leading cause of death in those under 35 years of age
- Every day around 2 people die by suicide in Scotland
- Scotland has traditionally had a higher suicide rate than the rest of the UK, however over recent years rates are starting to come down. Since the period 2000-02 the rate has fallen by 13%
- The risk of suicide in the most deprived areas of Scotland is almost double the Scottish average

Aims of the Service
In 2002 the Scottish Executive launched Choose Life, a ten year strategy and action plan to reduce suicide in Scotland.
The SDAMH Approaches to Choosing Life Service is funded by The Scottish Executive’s “Choose Life”. Its primary aim is to respond to ‘unmet need’ in Stirling Council area.
The Service facilitates opportunities for organisations to work together in partnership on a range of training and educational programmes pertaining to the promotion of good mental health and well-being, suicide intervention and prevention, for whichever individuals or group of people those organisations are working with.
It also aims to assist businesses in Stirling District provide a range of Awareness Raising Events, promoting general awareness of good mental health and encourage people to seek help early.
In addition, the Service offers organisations assistance in the development of information packs pertaining to mental health issues for employees.

- Preventing suicide also involves promoting life and well being
- Most people who attempt suicide do not want to die; they want to end the pain they are suffering
- If you are worried that someone is suicidal, ask them. It could save their life
- If you are feeling suicidal, don’t hide it, talk to someone you trust or phone a helpline
