SDAMH Counselling Service

Can Counselling help me?

  • Is life a struggle?
  • Do you feel you're not coping?
  • Would it help to talk to someone who is not involved?
  • Ever wonder why the same things keep happening to you?
  • Would you like to learn different ways of handling difficult situations?

If you answered "yes" to some of these questions then counselling might help you.

What is Counselling?
Counselling is a process during which you and the Counsellor agree to meet on a regular basis to look at issues which cause you distress.

Meetings will take place in a welcoming, supportive, and confidential environment. People come to counselling for many different reasons and with all sorts of issues. So your Counsellor will not be shocked or judgmental about what you say.

SDAMH Counselling Service is for people who live in Stirling Council Area and whose lives are affected by mental health issues.

One of the aims of Counselling is to help you to understand more about yourself. Another aim is to look at options for change and explore these with the Counsellor.

How long does it take?
SDAMH Counselling Service offers a maximum of 12 sessions of 50 minutes each. Some people will only wish to come once or twice; others may need all 12 sessions. The Counsellor will help you to determine your needs.

What is asked of me?
To make a commitment to attend each appointment or let SDAMH know as soon as possible if you cannot make the appointment so we can offer it to someone else who is waiting.

How much will it cost?
The SDAMH Counselling Service is free to appropriate people. However, if you wish to make a donation, it will be gratefully received and acknowledged. The money will go towards extending the Service to others in need.

What is the next step?
You may refer yourself to the Counselling Service if you wish. Or, your GP, Psychiatrist, CPN, Social Worker, or Key Worker may make the referral. In either case, you will be invited, usually in writing, to attend an assessment session, to exchange more information and check out whether SDAMH Counselling Service is appropriate for you.
